Join us for a lecture by Dr. Korie Grayson, a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow and STEM diversity advocate for the 15th Annual James E.K. Hildreth Lecture. The Annual Lecture celebrates diversity by highlighting a leader who reflects, supports, and/or promotes diversity in the fields of biomedical research, public health, or nursing in an effort to educate the Hopkins community.
Although women make up nearly half the United States’ workforce, they remain under-represented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, particularly at advanced career stages and in leadership. Recent data shows that women earn 53% of STEM-related Bachelor’s degrees and 58% of all Bachelor’s degrees; however, they make up only 28% of the STEM workforce.
The theme of our 6th annual Chicago Women in STEM Symposium is Breaking Through Barriers in STEM. This event aims to address the disappointing statistics regarding the representation of women in STEM-related careers by hosting a variety of speakers who will share their stories and provide valuable information about resilience, empowerment, and breaking through both visible and invisible barriers in STEM.
In today's digital landscape, STEM professionals are not only contributing to groundbreaking research and innovation but are also actively engaging with audiences as influencers. Building a personal brand and leveraging social media platforms can provide STEM professionals with exciting opportunities to secure brand deals and sponsorships. However, the path to landing these partnerships requires strategic navigation and a deep understanding of the unique dynamics within the STEM industry.
For too long, we have had this stereotypical image in our head of who can be and what exactly is a scientist. No longer should those stereotypes stand, for anyone can be in STEM. Let me show you how we can increase the representation of underrepresented groups in STEM and emphasize that THIS IS WHAT A SCIENTIST LOOKS LIKE!
Dr. Korie Grayson will explain to you how to overcome obstacles such as unconscious bias, stereotype threat, and imposter syndrome to help you succeed in the opportunistic world of STEM.
Key Takeaways:
Understanding unconscious bias, stereotype threat and imposter syndrome
Strategies for counteracting unconscious bias, stereotype threat, and imposter syndrome
Ways to create inclusive environments in STEM
Reframing your mindset to see and find different examples of role models in STEM
Meet Dr. Korie Grayson who holds a Doctorate’s in Biomedical Engineering, a Bachelor’s in Chemistry and is the Head Diversity Chair for Women Doing Science and Director of Finance for Black in Cancer.
Dr. Korie will share insight about:
• her journey into STEM,
• current research,

SWE’s research on community college students in STEM, specifically of women who have begun their engineering and computer science education at a two-year institution, highlights the limited networks that students on this pathway have to STEM professionals and support systems.
As a professional society aimed at empowering women in engineering and technology at all stages of their career, SWE is offering virtual networking activities to engage women in two-year colleges, four-year universities, and the workforce to drive the growth of women’s professional networks and encourage more college students to stay on their pathway towards an engineering or technology degree.
Join us for our Fall 2021 event series: #Renew. #Relaunch. #Redefine. Register for our remaining December 8 event featuring Dr. Korie Grayson here! Each event will include an interactive interview with an exciting woman in STEM, followed by breakout sessions to engage and network with other event participants. And we will be raffling SWE Swag, but you have to be present to win!
